Aier Intech Take the Lead to Introduce New Treating Method f

Aier Intech is one of the few hospitals that are able to provide lucentis, a prescription medication given by injection into the eye to effectively treat wet type age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD). 

AMD is a major cause of blindness and visual impairment in older adults over 50. AMD occurs in “dry” and “wet” forms. Wet AMD is more severe by presenting fragile blood vessels growing up from the choroid behind the retina and leaking vessels cause exudation, bleeding and scar tissues and finally may lead to retina detachment. Traditional ways of controlling neovascularization include laser photocoagulation, surgery, TTT and medicine. However, all methods present both advantages and disadvantages. Some defects of these treating methods include damage of health tissues, lack of selectivity and speciality in treating the diseased tissue, requirement of exceptionally high skills and hard to achieve satisfactory vision recovery etc. With PDT, the currently safe and effective treating method, patient has to avoid exposure to lights and can not achieve vision restoration as satisfying. 

Lucentis binds to and inhibits a number of subtypes of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A). VEGF may trigger the growth of new vessels, which may leak blood and fluid into the eye. These leaky blood vessels may contribute to macular edema and choroidal neovascularization, resulting in the wet type of AMD.

By blocking VEGF-A in the eye, lucentis may prevent and reverse vision loss caused by wet macular degeneration without harm any health tissues and can achieve better vision recovery than other methods.
